Across Mark and Matthew you have watched crowds, disciples, and leaders answer the question Jesus asked: "Who do you say that I am?" (Mark 8:29). Matthew's Gospel ends by sending disciples to all nations. Later John will say he wrote "that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God" (John 20:31). This checkpoint is not a new opinion. It is a pause to name what the text has shown so far: Jesus claims a place only God can hold, goes to the cross, and is raised.
