How to read this page

Each law works like a law of nature. It has three parts:

  • The rule. One plain sentence anyone can use.
  • Keep it / Break it. What the Bible says tends to happen when people keep the rule, and when they break it.
  • Shows up in. Books where the same rule appears. The list runs across the whole Bible: the law of Moses, the prophets and history books, the wisdom books like Proverbs, the Gospels, and the letters.

The signal test. If a rule shows up again and again, from the first books to the last, by many writers over many centuries, it is signal. If it shows up only once, or only in later church teaching, it may be something people added. Book pages flag those.

Some famous sayings are not in the Bible at all. “God helps those who help themselves” was made popular by Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard’s Almanack (1736). “Cleanliness is next to godliness” was made popular by John Wesley in a 1786 sermon, quoting an older saying. “Spare the rod, spoil the child” comes from Samuel Butler’s poem Hudibras (1664).

  • The pattern, with verses. Kept: Joseph’s stored grain carries a nation through seven bad years (Genesis 41:36), and the wise have “oil in the dwelling” (Proverbs 21:20). How the laws interlock

  • Law 1 is the root. If God owns everything, then people (Law 3), money (Laws 7–9), and time (Law 10) are held in trust.
  • Law 2 is the test. Jesus says the whole law hangs on Laws 1 and 2 (Matthew 22:37–40). The other ten show what those two look like in daily life.
  • The money laws work as a set. Work honestly (7) produces; enough and give (8) keeps greed out; margin (9) keeps debt from owning you; rest (10) keeps work from becoming slavery.
  • Laws 4 and 11 face each other. Power (11) is tested by what it does to the weakest (4).
  • Law 12 keeps the system running. Everyone breaks the laws. Repair is how people and communities recover.
