The big idea
In short: tell the truth, and love inside it. The command is “that we love one another” (verse 5). But “many deceivers are entered into the world” (verse 7), so love does not mean giving every teaching a platform.

What it says
Verses 1–6 · Love and truth. The elder loves them “in the truth” (verse 1). The old command is still the command: love one another (verse 5). “This is love, that we walk after his commandments” (verse 6).
Verses 7–13 · Watch the door. Some teachers deny “that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh” (verse 7). Don’t host them or send them off with a blessing (verses 10–11). The elder would rather talk “face to face” than write (verse 12).
Go deeper
- Original words. Kyria, “lady” (verses 1, 5), is the feminine of kyrios, “lord.” It may be a way to address a church, which Greek treats as feminine.
- The setting. Traveling teachers depended on church homes for food and a bed. Hosting them was a way of sending them on with support.
- How the laws interlock. Law 5 is verse 7: the truth about Jesus. Law 2 is verse 5: love is still the command.

“Receive him not into your house” (verse 10)

What people added Many read this as about not giving false teachers a base and support, not about refusing to be kind to anyone who disagrees. Some groups use it to justify shunning former members. Readers differ on where the line falls.
